Russell Hobbs is of course the well known and established home appliance supplier. They also make toasters, coffee machines and blenders. Brita is a water filter manufacturer whose filters are often used in the products of other companies, as is the case here.

I particularly like that you can see through the cylindrical chamber and that the inside will light up blue when the kettle is boiling. We will begin the Russell Hobbs 22851 Purity Brita Filter Kettle review by giving an overview of its basic features, followed by more detailed comments on its other features as well as the Brita Maxtra Filter.

Further features include:

Russell Hobbs 22851 kettle's water filter.

1. A Brita Maxtra Filter. The Russell Hobbs 22851 kettle comes with a Brita Maxtra Filter cartridge. The filter is designed to remove chemicals such as chlorine, lead and copper from the water. Most importantly it will reduce limescale by filtering calcium carbonate.

Having a filter is extremely useful especially when you live in England which (for the most part anyway) has tap water full of impurities.

It is recommended that the filter be replaced every four weeks to keep the water fresh and clean. However, the kettle will still run without a filter.

Note: If you choose to remove the filter then limescale will build up faster.

2. Boil Dry Protection. The kettle will switch itself off if it contains too little water. Boil dry protection is useful and has in the past prevented damage to kettles. These days most kettles come equipped with this feature.

3. Concealed Heating Element. Around the side of the kettle and near the base is the heating element. It is hidden from view so that it cannot gather limescale which would both reduce its lifespan and ruin your drink. It also maximises space in the chamber of the kettle.

4. 360 Degree Base. The kettle can be put down at any angle on its base. While this feature is not in any way essential, it is very convenient.

Durability and Maintenance

The Russell Hobbs 22851 appears to be well made. It has a sturdy handle and its components seem to be secured properly. There do not appear to be any major problems specific to this kettle so it should last a reasonably long time.

As for maintenance, cleaning the kettle is easy as both the outside and the inside can be wiped over with a damp cloth. It is recommended that the Brita Maxtra Filter be replaced every four weeks which I could see getting annoying, although to be honest I would be tempted just to leave the filter out unless I really needed clean and clear water.

Style

Relative to the average kettle, the Russell Hobbs 22851 is slightly larger. There is stainless steel around the bottom of the kettle and plastic in most other places. I rather like the way the black plastic around the rim of the tank and along the handle look. When the kettle is boiling the tank illuminates a bright blue which I also quite like.

Overall

Overall the Russell Hobbs 22851 Brita Purity Kettle appears to be a good kettle. If you want clean and clear water then this kettle is ideal as it is designed to work with Brita Maxtra Filters.
